Ubud Tour or Nusa Penida? How to Choose Your Bali Day Trip (2026)

Bali Ubud Tour — private Ubud day trip with hotel pickup and drop-off in Bali

Last updated: September 2026 · By the Edy Bali Tours team — local driver-guides based in Bali since 2015.

Quick answer: Book the Ubud tour if you want Balinese culture, rice terraces and a relaxed day with no boat crossing — it costs IDR 700,000 (≈US$38) per car for up to 5 guests. Book a Nusa Penida tour if you want dramatic cliff viewpoints and island scenery — it costs IDR 1,190,000 (≈US$85) per person. Because Ubud is priced per car and Nusa Penida is priced per person, the price gap grows with every extra traveller. That single detail decides the question for most groups.

The Price Difference Nobody Explains: Per Car vs Per Person

Almost every comparison of these two day trips quotes a headline price without saying what it is charged per. That makes the numbers meaningless. An Ubud tour is sold per car: the same IDR 700,000 covers one traveller or five. A Nusa Penida tour is sold per person, because it has to include a fast boat ticket for every seat.

Group sizeUbud TourNusa Penida TourExtra you pay for Nusa Penida
1 guestIDR 700,000 (≈$38)IDR 1,190,000 (≈$85)IDR 490,000
2 guestsIDR 700,000 (≈$38)IDR 2,380,000 (≈$170)IDR 1,680,000
4 guestsIDR 700,000 (≈$38)IDR 4,760,000 (≈$340)IDR 4,060,000
6 guestsIDR 1,200,000 (≈$65) — Toyota HiaceIDR 7,140,000 (≈$510)IDR 5,940,000
10 guestsIDR 1,200,000 (≈$65) — Toyota HiaceIDR 11,900,000 (≈$850)IDR 10,700,000

Read that table against your own group and the decision often makes itself. A family of four pays IDR 700,000 for a private Ubud tour and IDR 4,760,000 for the same day on Nusa Penida — nearly seven times as much, before lunch. For a solo traveller or a couple, the difference is real but manageable, and Nusa Penida becomes much easier to justify.

Two more lines belong in the comparison. On the Ubud tour you pay attraction tickets at the gate: roughly IDR 100,000 for the Barong dance, IDR 20,000–50,000 for Tegenungan, IDR 25,000–50,000 for Tegalalang and IDR 130,000 for the Monkey Forest — about IDR 300,000–450,000 per adult for the standard route. On Nusa Penida each viewpoint collects its own small entrance fee on the island, and the fast boat tickets are already inside the tour price. Ask us for a written quote with every fee named and you can compare two days on equal ground.

What an Ubud Tour Actually Feels Like

Ubud is the culture day. The morning opens with the Barong and Keris dance in Batubulan, a masked drama about the lion-like Barong and the demon queen Rangda that ends in balance rather than victory. From there the day moves through Celuk’s silver workshops, Tegenungan Waterfall, the terraced paddies of Tegalalang, the Sacred Monkey Forest, the Ubud Royal Palace and the market opposite it.

The rhythm is gentle. Ubud sits 700–800 metres above sea level, so the air is noticeably cooler than Kuta or Seminyak, and total driving is only about 2.5 hours of your 10. The rest is spent on foot at stops that are close together, which is why children and older travellers cope well with it. If you want the minute-by-minute version, we wrote a separate hour-by-hour Ubud tour itinerary covering pickup times and how to stay ahead of the coach groups.

What Ubud does not have is a big, empty-view moment. There is no cliff you drive up to and photograph for twenty minutes. The appeal is texture: temple carvings, the smell of a rice field after rain, artisans working at benches that have not moved in decades.

What a Nusa Penida Tour Actually Feels Like

Nusa Penida is the scenery day, and it starts earlier than most people expect. Fast boats leave Sanur around 07:30, and the crossing to the island takes roughly 30–45 minutes depending on the sea. You then switch to a private car on the island and spend the rest of the day moving between viewpoints on narrow, winding roads.

The west side is the famous one: Kelingking Beach, the T-rex-shaped cliff that major travel sites use to advertise Bali; Paluang Cliff, the quieter neighbouring viewpoint; Broken Beach, a natural rock arch over a collapsed bay; Angel’s Billabong, a natural infinity pool that is only safe to enter at low tide; and Crystal Bay for a swim or a sunset. The east side trades the crowds for Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, the Tree House Molenteng, the Raja Lima thousand-island viewpoint and the Teletubbies Hills. The Combination trip stitches highlights of both into one day, which is efficient but long.

Be honest about the shape of the day: you are mostly standing on clifftops looking down at beaches rather than lying on them. Beach time at Crystal Bay is usually an hour, not an afternoon. The cliff stairways are steep, and Kelingking’s descent is the single hardest physical thing in either itinerary. If anyone in your group cannot manage long staircases, plan to enjoy Kelingking from the top — the view is the point anyway.

Roads on the island are the other reality. Distances look short on a map and take far longer than they should, which is why we do not recommend trying to cover the east and west coasts properly in one day unless the sea is calm and you accept a rushed pace.

Which Day Trip Fits You? A Decision List

One free day on your first Bali trip

Ubud. It is Bali’s cultural centre, requires no boat and no early sea crossing, and works in any weather. Save Nusa Penida for a trip where you have a spare day, because a rough sea can take the day off you.

Families with young children or grandparents

Ubud. The fast boat, the waiting at the harbour, the steep cliff stairs and the winding island roads all add up against you on Nusa Penida. In Ubud, the dance, the monkey forest and the market are genuinely child-friendly, and the driving is short.

Photographers

Nusa Penida, without much debate. Kelingking, Broken Beach, Diamond Beach and Raja Lima give you images with no mainland equivalent. Book the early boat and expect to shoot the western viewpoints in flat but usable morning light.

Couples and honeymooners

It depends on the mood you want. Nusa Penida is the more spectacular date; Ubud is the more romantic one — a slower day of terraces, temples and dinner in town afterwards. Many couples we drive do Ubud first and Nusa Penida second.

Snorkellers and anyone chasing manta rays

The Nusa Penida Snorkeling Package — manta rays at Manta Bay, coral at Gamat Bay, Wall Bay and Crystal Bay, with a private snorkeling boat, equipment and underwater photography included. Ubud does not compete here at all.

Groups of four or more on a budget

Ubud, then consider adding a second mainland day such as Kintamani. Two private car days for a group of six still cost less than one per-person day on Nusa Penida.

Anyone prone to seasickness

Ubud, or the mainland tour of your choice. The Sanur crossing is short but the Nusa Penida channel can be choppy, especially in the rainy season.

Solo travellers and couples who want maximum scenery per rupiah

Nusa Penida. Per-person pricing is only painful when the group is large; for one or two people, IDR 1,190,000 each buys a boat, an island, a private car and a driver-guide, which is hard to beat.

Rainy Season, Rough Seas and Timing

The dry season, roughly April to October, is the better half of the year for Nusa Penida: calmer crossings, clearer water, drier cliff paths. In the rainy season from December to March, fast boats are occasionally held back by swell and the crossing is bumpier — on those days a plan B matters, and we will tell you in the morning whether we would sail.

Ubud is a lower-risk booking in every month. Rain does not close the dance, the market, the palace or the monkey forest. It does change two things: Tegenungan’s water turns brown and swimming there becomes unsafe, and the rice terrace paths get slippery. Both are easy to work around, and your driver will reroute on the day.

Can You Do Both in One Trip?

Yes — on two separate days, never combined. They leave from different places, run to different clocks, and Nusa Penida already uses a full day once you count the boat. A pattern that works well for guests staying six or seven nights:

  • Day 1 (mainland): Ubud tour — no boat, low risk, good introduction to Balinese culture after a long flight.
  • Mid-trip: Nusa Penida West or East — after you are settled into Bali time and can leave early without jet lag.
  • Optional third day: a mainland tour such as Kintamani or Uluwatu if the sea looks unsettled.

If you only have two free days, this is the pairing we recommend most often. If you only have one, use the decision list above rather than trying to squeeze both.

Five Mistakes That Ruin These Day Trips

  • Treating Nusa Penida as a beach day. You are there for the clifftops. Bring swimming gear for Crystal Bay, but do not plan your day around lounging.
  • Comparing quotes without checking the pricing unit. A “cheaper” per-person Nusa Penida quote and a per-car Ubud quote are not comparable numbers. Always ask: per car or per person, and are boat tickets and entrance fees inside the price?
  • Assuming entrance fees are included. On the Ubud tour, attraction tickets are paid at the gate. On Nusa Penida, each viewpoint charges its own small fee on the island. Budget for both.
  • Booking Nusa Penida as a single rushed day when you would love it overnight. If the island’s scenery is the main reason you came to Bali, two days there beats one day of viewpoint-hopping.
  • Starting the Ubud tour at 10:00. By 11:30 the coach groups reach Tegalalang and the Monkey Forest. Leaving at 07:00–07:30 puts you ahead of them and ahead of the Kuta–Ubud traffic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ubud tour or the Nusa Penida tour better for a first visit to Bali?

The Ubud tour. It needs no boat crossing, works in any weather, suits every age group, and covers Bali’s cultural highlights — dance, artisan villages, rice terraces, Monkey Forest, the royal palace and the market — in one 10-hour day.

Why is the Ubud tour cheaper than a Nusa Penida tour?

Because of how each is priced. The Ubud tour is charged per car — IDR 700,000 (about US$38) for up to 5 guests — while Nusa Penida is charged per person at IDR 1,190,000 (about US$85) because every guest needs a round-trip fast boat seat. For a group of four, that is IDR 700,000 versus IDR 4,760,000.

Can I do the Ubud tour and Nusa Penida in the same day?

No. Nusa Penida requires a 30–45 minute fast boat crossing from Sanur plus island transfers, and it already fills a full 8–9 hour day. Plan them as two separate days.

How long does the boat crossing to Nusa Penida take?

About 30–45 minutes from Sanur each way, depending on the sea. Our Nusa Penida tours depart Sanur around 07:30 and return from the island at approximately 16:00 on the same day, with round-trip fast boat tickets included.

Is a Nusa Penida tour suitable for children and older travellers?

It is possible but demanding. The day involves an early harbour start, a boat crossing, winding island roads and steep cliff stairways. Families with toddlers and guests with limited mobility are usually happier on the Ubud tour and should enjoy Kelingking-style viewpoints from the top only.

Which tour is better in the rainy season?

The Ubud tour. Rain does not stop the dance, market, palace or Monkey Forest; only the waterfall swim is affected. In the rainy season from December to March, rough seas can delay or cancel fast boats to Nusa Penida.

Do I need to book these tours in advance?

One to two days ahead is enough in low season. In July, August, December and around Easter, book three to five days ahead — English-speaking drivers and fast boat seats are the constraint, not vehicles.

What is included in each tour price?

The Ubud tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a private air-conditioned car, bottled water, parking fees and taxes. Nusa Penida tours include return hotel transfers, round-trip fast boat tickets, a private car on the island, a driver-guide and mineral water. Neither price includes meals, personal expenses, travel insurance or tips, and attraction or site entrance fees are paid separately.

Can I combine Nusa Penida’s east and west coasts?

Yes — the Nusa Penida Combination trip covers highlights of both, including Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, the Tree House Molenteng and the Raja Lima viewpoint. It is a long day and works best when the sea is calm.

How do I get a firm price for my group?

Send your travel dates, hotel area and group size to our team on WhatsApp at +62 815-4712-4849. Because the Ubud tour is priced per car and Nusa Penida per person, group size changes the answer completely, and we will quote the cheaper structure for your numbers.

Still Deciding? Ask a Local Driver

Both days are good; the question is which one is good for your group, your dates and your energy levels. Send us your travel dates, hotel area and how many people are travelling on WhatsApp at +62 815-4712-4849 and we will tell you plainly which day trip suits you better — including when the honest answer is Ubud.
